Three-Point Shot: The [First-Ever} Ocho Cup Basketball Tournament

CUBAO, QUEZON CITY – January 22nd marks the day of the opening of the first-ever evangelistic Basketball Tournament in Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach Church. Headed by 8:00 Family Celebration’s Byron Buyoc and his team of 12, the event has been composed of eight teams of men from different folks and strokes.

The tournament had but one goal in mind. Aside from the two other obvious goals of camaraderie and love of the sport, The Ocho Cup was built to spread the Word of God through Basketball.

Parade of Colors

The event started with the parade of teams which consists of the following:

  • Bataan Transit (Red)
  • JCSGO Staff (Green)
  • Team ‘Crucial’ (Violet)
  • Team ‘Elevate’ (Black)
  • The Good Guys (Gray)
  • ES Transit (White)
  • Team ‘Marvelous’ (Blue)
  • The XLR8 (Orange)

The teams with their banners headed by their team captains and playing coaches ramped the JCSGO Seed Dome court with their team color to represent not only their team but also the group of which they have been invited from onto the 8:00 Family’s Basketball Ministry.

Host, Mark Arroyo, one of Byron’s G12 Team members, jump-started the Opening Remarks by providing a brief history of the Wednesday Basketball Ministry that has turned to be their first Conference named, The Ocho Cup.

The Basketball Ministry’s Scriptural Foundation comes from one that is very famous amongst Christians and the likes. Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God…”

Byron and his team of twelve resolved to come up with an activity for their group that would involve physical tasks in which they can spend more time as a group and may be used to share the love of God to more people. The first and most common of all interests the team had was, of course, Basketball.

The team started at the Masagana Basketball Court in Project 4, Quezon City. This is the venue for their first game. The JCSGO Church Staff has eventually learned of this and has invited them to play at the JCSGO Seed Dome as they would normally schedule during Wednesdays. Soon, the team realized that their number is ‘too few’ for Basketball to be enjoyed. “Why not invite?” they said. Thus, the participants of the Wednesday basketball group has started inviting from nearby places like the ES Transport station, the nearby barangays and the players’ office-mates.

Soon, their numbers doubled, and then, tripled. The weekly Wednesday Basketball sessions not only was a place for men with the same love for hoops but also became a venue for sharing God’s Word and for more men (and their families) to come to know the love of Christ in their lives. Most of the Basketball Ministry players with their wives and children are now regular attendees of the 8:00 Family Celebration and are part of the care groups that continue to mold them into maturity in Christ.

One person can create one team – this is the premise the Team-of-Twelve believed; thus, came the first-ever Ocho Cup Basketball Conference: promoting camaraderie, the love of Basketball and growth in the Word of God. What a three-point shot!
